This is the return of the Secret Weapon. I call it my secret weapon because it is a wine I love to pull out when I want to serve a sure thing. We haven't been able to offer the Secret Weapon for over two years due to extremely limited availability, and I am thrilled to present a new release of this lovely wine from a region that was one of the top performers of the 2015 vintage in France.

Very dark purple in the glass, this Grenache-Syrah blend opens with aromas of a concentrated berry compote wrapped in mineral and smoke. This is a rich, full-palate experience with a notable lift of acid and fine grained tannin to balance the fruit. With lingering impressions of black fruit, anise and bouquet garni, this has exceptional texture, a rich and long finish, and is, though I rarely use the word, a phenomenal wine.

Eric Solomon website:

"Château Puech-Haut occupies 170 hectares including 100 hectares of vines in Saint-Drézéry, a small village 15 km northeast of Montpellier, in the foothills of the Cevennes. In Provence, a "Puech" means a small hill (or mountain), a "Puech-Haut" is a hill higher than the others. This position, “on a hill higher than the others”, is conducive to exceptional drainage for the vineyards. The clay and limestone soil is composed of boulders brought by the Rhone in the Quaternary and its plots reside on hillsides protected from excessive temperatures by the nearby Mediterranean Sea and winds including the Mistral, the north wine pervasive in the region. This wine comes from the oldest vines, 60-75 years, and planted on a clay calcareous soil. It is a special bottling custom cuvee for Eric Solomon, made with Philippe Cambie for the US market. Pairs well with hearty meats, including duck, grilled red meat, beef ribs and lamb."

“The 2015 Saint Drezery Prestige is a ripe, sexy beauty that gives up full-bodied notes of black cherries, melted licorice and roasted herbs. Like all the wines from this estate, it has lots of richness and texture, yet stays balanced, lively and pure. It's a year in and year out value that's a no-brainer purchase. It will drink beautifully over the coming 4-5 years (possibly even longer).

Easily one of the top estates in the Languedoc (if not southern France), Chateau Puech Haut lies just outside the village of Saint-Drezery and is owned and run by Gerard Bru, with consulting help from Philippe Cambie. They produce a number of cuvees, with their entry level efforts representing superb values, and their top cuvees being able to stand toe to toe with the greatest wines in the world."  - Jeb Dunnuck
