We haven’t visited Tuscany in a while, and one of the most beloved wines in our entire offering history is Chianti Classico. It is with near reverence that I approach each new vintage of the Isole e Olena Chianti Classico, a wine so consistently great that there is only an anticipation of the magnitude of achievement rather than any doubt that greatness will again be realized. And so it is with the 2015 incarnation of the Classico, a wine so filled with character and flavor that new layers of experience emerge with every sip. This wine is damn good and you need some.

Isola e Olena is the combination of two estates purchased by the De Marchi family in the 1950’s, in the heart of the Chianti Classico region. After the family’s 4th generation winemaker, Paolo De Marchi, returned home from working harvests in California and France, he began a project of modernization in order to bring the estate into the 21st century, extensively replanting vineyards and updating winery equipment. For his Chianti Classico, he combines Sangiovese with Canaiolo (a native Tuscan variety that gives a darker fruit character to wines), and finishes the wine with a small percentage of Syrah. This unique combination of grapes leads to a more intense and complex Chianti Classico than many typical examples from the region. As reflected in the following reviews, his efforts are universally revered, so I am not alone in my regard for Paolo’s work.

Winemaker Notes:

“Estate-grown, hand-harvested grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with approximately 15 days maceration. During fermentation, delestage (racking and returning a wine back to the tank) and pumping-over takes place twice a day. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked into barrels and 4,000 liter casks where it matures for about one year.”

Blend: 82% Sangiovese, 15% Canaiolo Nero and 3% Syrah

“Aromas of blueberries, blackberries and burnt orange follow through to a full body with round yet firm tannins. A lovely, pure finish. Shows focus and finesse. Drink now or hold.”

92 points, Wine Advocate:

“The 2015 Chianti Classico is a bright and convincing wine from Barberino Val d'Elsa, one of the main comuni in the greater Chianti Classico appellation. This is a smooth and silky Sangiovese that glides clean over the palate with strength and intensity. Bright cherry, blueberry and herbal accents with wild sage and rosemary characterize the finish. Like many other wines from the 2015 vintage, there is an evident touch of cherry sweetness on the close.”

92 points, Wine Spectator:

“A dark expression of black currant, blackberry, iron and tar flavors renders this red slightly ominous, showing ripeness and harmony. Vibrant, ending with good grip.”

90 points, Decanter:

“This is a benchmark Chianti Classico, despite the eclectic inclusion of 3% Syrah. A rich, ripe and classy mouthful.”
