It’s been a while since we’ve worked with our old partners at Eric Solomon Selections, but they are still rockin’ the great stuff at great prices thing, and we’ve got one today you need to be stocking in by the case. There’s not a lot of this vintage left, so read fast and buy faster because like a lot of our Solomon offerings, this will sell out.

José Maria is a third generation owner and operator of Casa Castillo, a farm that began as a rosemary plantation but one that has evolved into the preeminent estate in the DO of Jumilla. While the smell of rosemary still lingers in the air, the pale, rocky soils surrounding his house and cellar are now planted with vines and almond orchards. When José Maria’s grandfather purchased Casa Castillo in 1941 there was already a winery, cellar and some scattered vineyards on the property dating to the 1870s, established by French refugees fleeing the plight of phylloxera in their native land. In 1985 José and his father began to replant the vineyards and expand them with the goal of making wine on the property. In 1991 they bottled their first commercial vintage.

This is the entry level wine for Casa Castillo, made from younger Mourvedre vines sourced mainly from La Valle vineyard. In any given vintage, 8-15% of the blend includes Syrah and Garnacha. After a natural fermentation in tank the wine is aged for 8-9 months in neutral 500 liter French oak barrels, concrete tanks or foudre. It is a dark and rich expression of Mourvedre with spicy plum compote flavors and a rich finish supported by mild tannic structure and uplifting acidity.

91 points, James Suckling:

“Rich raspberry and blackberry fruits that deliver in a bold and juicy way. Appealingly fresh and flavor-drenched style.”

90 points, Best Buy, Wine Enthusiast:

“This Monastrell gets going with roasted plum and berry aromas, with side notes of crushed stones. A full palate with an iron grip shows flavors of black fruits and coffee. A fleshy finish is spicy and dark in flavor. Drink through 2019. Best Buy.”

90 points, Vinous:

“Deep, bright rimmed violet color. Powerful dark berry, licorice and woodsmoke qualities on the nose, along with a hint of peppery spices that build with air. Chewy and focused on the palate, spice-tinged black/blue fruit flavors and a subtle touch of gaminess. Rich yet energetic in style, delivering impressive finishing thrust and dusty tannins that frame lingering dark fruit.”

So, here you go. Welcome to June. This is the steal of the month.
