J. Christopher Pinot Noir Basalte 2015, Willamette Valley

Winery notes:

“The soil in this AVA is amazing, encompassing everything from sedimentary sea beds to red volcanic soils to glacial sediment. In our own vineyard, Appassionata, we have counted 11 different soil types. With the variations in aspect and soil, we have at least 10 or 12 distinctly different terroir possibilities to work with. It's a really interesting piece of property geologically, which makes it fascinating viticulturally as well.”

91 points, Wine Spectator:

“Refined and well-knit, with black cherry and tart blueberry flavors accented by black tea and spice notes. Drink now through 2024.”

90 points, Vinous:

“Limpid ruby-red. Musky red berry and floral scents are sharpened by smoky mineral and white pepper flourishes. Silky, sweet and focused on the palate, offering sappy raspberry and cherry cola flavors and a touch of candied lavender. Fine-grained tannins build slowly through a long, mineral-laced finish that leaves behind bitter cherry and peppery spice notes.

The Basalte Pinot Noir is selected from the estate vineyards in the Chehalem Mountains. In the Chehalem Mountains AVA, we source fruit from these excellent vineyards: Appassionata (our own estate vineyard), Lia's, Olenik and Medici.”
